With every year, a new one is established providing classes from short enrichment courses for adventurous adults and children, AP classes that provide High School-ers with college credit to full immersion schools where a child can learn as though they live in the country with the chosen language spoken all day in class.

As a Chinese parent of two little ones, I started compiling schools that provide Chinese courses and here they are. The main language taught is Mandarin, which is the official language of China though among Mandarin classes, there are two schools of thought. One is Mandarin as spoken and written in China and the other is Mandarin as spoken and written in Taiwan. From a verbal standpoint, the differences are slight though many feel that each has their own “accents” but one can easily understand the other. The choice between one or the other falls strongly under heritage as well as for some, practicality.

In general, many private schools such as Montessori and La Jolla Country Day teach Mandarin as apart of their curriculum. For other alternatives, here are a few.

How to identify a safe neighborhood

When deciding where to live, one main consideration is how safe in the neighborhood.  In addition to asking your neighbors and your realtor, there are a number of web sites that can provide pertinent information to determine how safe it is.

1.  Check with you local police or sheriff’s office and ask about reported incidents, response times and neighborhood watch efforts. Then, go online to http://www.mapping.arjis.org/

2. Walk the neighborhood and check out parking as well as common areas like parks and median strips. Then go online to http://walkscore.com/

Researching the web as well as talking with neighbors, local police will provide you with information to decide if you feel safe in that neighborhood. Being safe is more than just facts, it is also taking precautions to provide the safe feeling with want in our home.

Pre-qualifying vs. Pre-approval to Buy a Home

 How can I buy a home in San Diego?

There are a number of hurdles one must jump to buy a home or condo or townhome in San Diego.  One of the most important is to not only to have the money to purchase the home but to be able to provide evidence to the seller that you can perform.  The best way to do this is to meet with a loan consultant and determfine if you can be PRE-QUALIFIED  or PRE-APPROVED.

PRE-QUALIFIED is the first step to obtain financing. The potential buyer provides the loan consultant with basic information about his/her financial situation: income, debt, savings and permission to review a credit report. Based upon this information, the loan consultant will let the potential buyer know if he/she is a good candidate to get a loan to buy the house.

PRE-APPROVED is more comprehensive and results in a written document that can be attached to an OFFER TO PURCHASE It means that  a complete application has been completed and reviewd by an underwriter and that the potential buyer is quite serious about his/her offer.
